Early Best 2005 Songs
Long time, no post. Well that's life. Sorry to see Tom DeLay stepping down -- what a shock. Well, someone's going to need to take over for Jack Abramoff in leading awkward lobbyist junkets.
Here, once again, is my highly incomplete list of best, most interesting, memorable, notable music for 2005. Not quite as strong as last year, but still a solid year.
Kanye West -- Late Registration -- Addiction One of this year's all-around best. Skip Golddigger and check a hard redning story about death and the diamond trade. Also, JayZ gets called out for glifying the bling, and at least has the courtesy to show up to defend himself.
Queens of the Stone Age -- In My Head. Is "Song of the Year" too strong?
Paul McCartney -- Fine Line If you haven't heard McCartney since "Band on the Run", check it out. Ranks up there with his best post-Beatles work.
Louis XIV -- Me Me Me Me The best UK band ever to come out of San Diego.
Beck -- EPro Return to mid90's form for this classic alternarocker.
BRMC -- Shuffle Your Feet. If Elvis Costello fronted a Quarrymen-era skiffle band...
Dave Matthews Band -- American Baby. Many old DMB fans hated this song. Part of its appeal?
Gorillaz -- Demon Days Fantastic to hear De La Soul again.
Foo Fighters -- No Way Back Just could not stop listening to this song all summer.
The 88 -- Hide Another Mistake Vintage mid-decade power pop. Just could not stop listening to this song all fall.
White Stripes -- My Doorbell. Catchy, and of the few acts I saw live.
My Chemical Romance -- Helena Twenty years too late for WLIR.
Bloc Party -- Banquet
Fall Out Boy -- Sugar, We're Going Down Goofy fun roller skating song of the year.
Ivy -- Tess, Dont Tell Between Astaire, Ivy, and Fountains, where didnt we see Adam Scheslinger in 2005?
Astaire -- Weightless See Ivy, above.
Alkaline Trio -- Time To Waste. Classical piano and post-modern punk, but they make it work.
The Bravery -- An Honest Mistake. OK, I liked it better when this was just called "the 80's"...
Love As Laughter -- Dirty Lives. Makes my think of the Kinks. Ah, the Kinks...
Spoon -- My Mathematical Mind Close second for album of the year?
Futureheads -- Decent Days and Nights
Maria Taylor -- Song Beneath the Song What a great hook.
Madonna -- Hung Up Best song since her late 90's work.
Oasis -- Lyla Underated return to form. Although at six mintues plus, a little long.
Shout Out Louds -- Wish I Was Dead
The Radio -- Whatever Gets You Through Today
Autolux -- Subzero Fun. This year's entry in the "I miss Elliott Smith" category.
Eagles of Death Metal -- I Only Want You. Insanely crazy, or devoiusly briliiant.
Hot Hot Heat -- Goodnight Goodnight. More clapping than an early 70's Steve Miller song.
Lou Barlow -- Legendary A soulful, underproduced gem
Wilco -- Panthers [UK Limited Release] Why wasn't this on the last album, seriously?
Coldplay -- Speed of Sound. The best song on a weaker than usual CD from the Britpop darlings.
Inara George -- Fools in Love. Joe Jackson she's not.
The Subways -- Rock and Roll Queen Good loud, and better louder.
And I couldnt decide between M. Ward and Bright Eyes. So you decide.
